About Me
Hi, I’m Ben Green, the founder of Green Timber Carpentry, a consult, design, and build company based in North Devon.
My passion lies in crafting unique, high-quality carpentry projects, with a particular focus on green timber construction.
My Journey to Carpentry
I grew up in Croydon, South East London, with a love for football and outdoor pursuits. My early experiences at PGL adventure centres inspired me to work in the outdoor industry, which led me to the Isle of Wight at 18. Over the next few years, I traveled across the UK and Ireland, developing teamwork, leadership, and organisational skills while working in outdoor education.
Eventually, I found my way to Bude, Cornwall, and later Croyde, North Devon, where I spent several summers as a Level 2 British Surfing Association Coach, teaching surfing on Croyde Beach. In the winters, I had the incredible opportunity to lead surf trips to Lanzarote and Costa Rica, refining my skills in managing people, logistics, and adventure sports.
Transition to Carpentry
After years in the outdoor industry, I felt the pull toward a more hands-on craft and embarked on a career in carpentry. I started by working with a respected local building company in North Devon, learning the trade under the guidance of John and Michael Irwin, two incredible mentors who passed on invaluable skills and knowledge. After completing my apprenticeship, I honed my expertise further with Focal Point, a well-established building company, before finally taking the leap to start my own business.
Now, with Green Timber Carpentry, I bring years of experience, craftsmanship, and a deep appreciation for natural materials into every project. Whether it’s a bespoke timber structure, a home renovation, or a creative outdoor build, I take pride in delivering work that blends functionality, sustainability, and beauty.
Life in North Devon
Outside of work, I enjoy the simple pleasures of coastal life—beach walks, time in nature, and of course, surfing. My two boys share my love for sports, especially football, surfing, and athletics, and it’s a joy to pass down those passions.
I’m a big believer in continuous growth and self-improvement, both physically and mentally. Training in strength and mobility with George Birch at Park Gym has been an essential part of my routine, helping me stay strong and capable for the work I love. Alongside physical training, I’m always looking for ways to grow—through reading, listening, and maintaining a growth mindset—ensuring I’m constantly evolving in both my craft and life.
